At the Crossroads

You don't get to choose how you're going to die. Or when. You can only decide how you're going to live. Now. --Joan Baez When men and women agree,it is only in their conclusions;their reasons are always different

Insatiable IT

I was reading an article and something that seemed funny to the author and not so funny to me struck me. It read " Always be sincere, whether or not you mean it".

'By the way I am not crazy, i am going sane in a crazy world'. Pretty much that.

Unfortunately Indian IT companies lack what is so strongly advocated here(US of A)- the importance of interpersonal dynamics. Also, i have not come across anybody who has the potential to spearhead a disparate team from the front and be successful. A dissatisfied employee can never add value to an organisation, however good he/she is. I see several dissatisfied employees crib about work, grumpy selfish bosses.... I have also met and talked to people who pretty much do the same work as we and seem happy. They adore their bosses and worship their work. The difference in the attitude of the employees can be attributed to a million different reasons, the most important being demanding supervisors.I have heard of the significance of effective leadership in the corporate world, haven't seen any though. Not more on how to be an effective manager(for i know very little myself), but from an employee perspective i can put forward my views on leadership and stuff. I have worked in 2 different teams, seen people move in and out of the team. Some were good at organisational issues while others at technical stuff. Its like a jigsaw puzzle, where the success lies in putting pieces of different size and shape together. Its about accomodating different people in a team, understand their needs and requirements, create a personal bond and get all the work done.I know its easier said than done. But nothing is unachievable.

I have heard about initiatives undertaken by organisations which addresses issues related to employee dissatisfaction. Most of it is just on paper and nothing materializes. Here in America employee satisfaction is of prime importance. The head of the organisation is more than happy and willing to meet his subordinates and share his experiences. Indian Corporate world is a murky place and it has a long way to go before it can claim to be successful.A revamping of the system is essential.Deal with the situation, fire bad leaders, plan for initiatives.. Employee dissaticfaction and Organisational success do not go hand in hand..

This post is dedicated to a friend of mine who became a martyr for the IT cause. Gave up his very precious life for nothing. I am saddened by the fact that his supervisor cannot be held responsible for his death.

No am not crazy, I am just living in a crazy world,..

Content is well written but life always showcases itself in shades of grey. The argument put forth here is too simplistic. What I would advocate is look into the issue much deeper and try to get to the root of the problem.
You may want to look at the culture quotient of India as a geography , compare it with other cultures (European , UK , so on) and that will give you some good insights into , managing Global work forces. Once can't advocate , that Management style of US firms is the best . That's like passing a judgement and I completely disown the claim being made here. You have Andersons , Enrons and others (not so far on the time scale). Had it been the case ( Mngt style here is the best) , we wouldn't have any bad stories emerging out of land of opportunities (OOPS !!! Developed nations are a passing fad , and Emerging markets are where the goldmines exist) ... So , if you are capitalist at heart , then it will be prudent to embrase the Indianess or Chinese ness and make buck out of the party , which is currently going on (SENSEX , Chinese INDEX , are on a long term bull trend) ... So,all you aspiring Management folks , learn how to play in GREY...

Death? Did you speak metaphorically or literally? Either way, it's disturbingly true. JFK was right when he commented about asking not what your country can do for you but the other way around. The same applies to organizations, where the Chairman (sorry, chairPERSON) is president and we the people work for our country.

Did I mention that I quit my corporate job because of the boss? Keep penning Jo. And death do work part.

    Defense to what I read!

    Being a Boss

Often heard that people join organizations but quit their bosses.
Humm...sounds scary as I am being a boss myself.

When I was a kid and used to see my dad working hard to make some money I used to
believe, work is all about hardship. Today the world is different and it is all about
Creating ideas at the right time and making a process or product out of it.
All the inventions like Internet, Hotmail were some dreamy ideas some time.

So what is the new generation boss does, does he create ideas, well not always!
He definitely welcomes few from his team and tries to give them a way to success.
In my opinion Boss is the man who gives hands to those who wants to come forward and
    achieve personal and organizational success.

A boss from outside world is welcomed much easier than the inside man going at the top.
People around you always try to find the old guy in you which at times difficult to deliver
as you being a boss need to keep certain distance with rest of the team.

It is a general misconception that the Boss is never with the team. You see him only when he needs
to declare something to the team or it is your bad day. Well I don't think so!
In fact Boss knows every move of the team as he leads that way and tries to make the team follow it.

There are great examples of the Bosses who were path breakers or trendsetters. What is so different they did - one great idea and good support from the team? All it takes to be a successful Boss is to make the team understand that all he does is successful if the team actually does it. It is not easy to do as to write though!

Bosses are not always as bad as they are talked about. They are always being misunderstood.
In case if you have issues with the Boss see if you can understand his viewpoint and align with his objective.

How I lead my career is by trying to do things which are beyond my reach and see the view from a step ahead.
It is not easy for the boss to show you same view as he perceives it, but he would try if you ask him.
In all means everyone works for a company not owned by your Boss as he is also a part of it.
When you loose a way, you find someone to blame to and who are the easy ones are the Bosses as everyone unanimously
thinks that their Boss is Bad.

At times even my Boss sucks but there are ten other times when he shows me a way , so what I accept to do is
make a progress and make him aware of it and get opinions, be as good as he could be. Most of the times there is nothing
Wrong or right, it is just the way we look at things. So go and help your Boss.. he also might be thinking that
his team is not a dream team as well!!!!!
