At the Crossroads

You don't get to choose how you're going to die. Or when. You can only decide how you're going to live. Now. --Joan Baez When men and women agree,it is only in their conclusions;their reasons are always different

Road most taken

I languidly walked down the stairs. After having spent a long sleepless night at work, i was in a terrible state of mind, a state resembling unconsciousness. I thanked God for showing me daylights and i rushed to the Cab and crashed. My workplace is located on the Old Mahabalipuram road(OMR) and it takes not more than 25 mins for me to reach home. My association with this road is quite old. My college is located a little further down the road and this sums up for the long association. I am sorry for digressing, but it was intentional. Half way through, i was awakened by a loud noise. It was a crazy sight. A lorry had collided into a car and one half of the vehicle was damaged to an unimaginable extent. I am fairly sure that the inhabitants of the car would have been crushed to death. I was grief-stricken for several days after having witnessed the accident.To the dwellers of the locality, it was a passable accident only to be forgottten.

The previous week, a couple was run over by a lorry on the same road. On average, atleast 10 people are killed every month and most killed are in the age group 25 to 45. I wish i had a camera to capture the scene and show the world the severity of the issue. The statistics indicate a sharp increase in the number of accidents on the OMR . Reckless hurried driving , loaded rickshaws and maxi vans, drunk lorry drivers are causes for accidents.

Though revamping of the road is underway, its proceeding at an annoyingly slow pace. It started way before i joined college ( i suppose 2004) and possibility of its completion in the near future is highly unlikely.In my opinion, rerouting of heavy vehicles(lorries and vans) , quickening of road construction and intervention by media to bring the issue to light will do the much needed. Its high time the govt intervenes and does something about it. Let the soul of the dead rest in peace :(. its distressing

    accidents have always been a part of chennai.. its just that the OMR is being overcrowded beyond its capacity due to the number of burgeoning IT companies there. Its high time the government thinks of a new highway.. and better links to various highways in the area..

    i dnt think as common man we can do much about it...the best thing we can do is to take care of ourselves and drive safe.....

    @Karthik

    Very little is thought about links and highways, much less done. And the kins of the dead dont seem to care much about it either. Its hightime someting is done about tis. The internal conflicts in the DMK has made matters worse. The construction work has stopped and most of Maran's decisions have been revoked.

    @Sachin
    I like ur attitude. Tke good care of urself.
